| Mascot Description |
In Latin, This species goes by the official names Pavo Cristatus and Pavo Muticus. The male is the only one that is officially a “Peacock”. The female goes by the name “Peahen”.
Typical in the animal world, and sometimes in our own, the male gets all the attention due to the amazing variety of brilliant feather coloration as he struts and poses given any incentive to do so. His vibrant colors are not pigments but optical interference “Bragg Reflections” based on regular periodic nanostructures of the barbules (fiber-like components of the feathers). This interference-based structural color is important for the Peacock’s iridescent hues that change and shimmer with the viewing angle, since unlike pigments, interference effects depend on light angle as everyone knows.
During the mating season, the males will often emit a very loud, high pitched cry which can damage the human ear drums.
In Greco-Roman mythology, the Peacock is identified with the goddess Hera (Juno). The “eyes” upon the Peacock’s tail comes from Argus whose hundred eyes were placed upon the Peacocks feathers by the goddess in memory of his role as the guardian of Io, a lover of Zeus that Hera has punished. The “eyes” are said to symbolize the vault of heaven and the “eyes” of the stars.
The females have a mixture of subdued colors in their makeup but are observed to have an uncanny ability to mesmerize and control the males which has puzzled investigators of this species over the years. They are the individuals in this species that keep a happy equilibrium among the families.
Is anyone surprised about this ?
